What Facial Mapping Can Tell You About Your Holistic Health

Editor’s note: We’re excited to welcome our guest blogger, Sarah from @lavenderandcobotanicals, to share her wealth of knowledge on all things holistic health and living a mindful life. The lovely Sarah is a final year naturopath student and runs Lavender & Co. Botanicals, a creative studio specialising in wellness. She has a great eye for impeccable styling, and her photos of floral and fauna over on her Instagram are oh-so-swoon-worthy!

Previously we’ve shared on our blog here a topic that stimulates a lot of interest and discussion from you merbabes – facial mapping with your face roller or gua sha stone. It’s a wonderful tool to help clear your skin and to achieve that ‘glass skin’ look without makeup. Here we’ve asked Sarah to expand on our previous post and share what she’s learnt as a naturopath student about facial mapping and its connection to food and herbs in our diet. Without further ado, grab a cuppa and have a good read. I hope you’ll find it insightful!

Face mapping originates from Traditional Chinese medicine, but as a soon to be naturopath it is also something utilised in the clinical setting to help us understand the possible cause for your breakouts.

Each part of the face is associated with a different internal organ or system, and where there is a breakout here it may indicate some imbalance or that the system is not functioning at its optimal level. As we now all know – what we put into our bodies is just as or perhaps even more important than our skincare in creating beautiful, healthy glowing skin.

Below you will find the facial mapping chart created by the team here at Julisa, where you can see each of the corresponding organs or systems in regards to the face itself.

Naturopathically, this is a great tool we use alongside our holistic case taking, functional testing and other practices to help determine the true underlying causes for your current condition. In the next few paragraphs, I have detailed some of the general herbs and foods that can be useful in treating each area that may be affected. Please know that these are not medical recommendations and individualised care for treating acne is the best way to go about it, as often there is more than just one cause for the acne.

STOMACH & SMALL INTESTINES

We see this often presenting on the upper cheeks, and can indicate imbalance within the microbiome, pH levels, and also our digestive secretions such as enzymes and hydrochloric acid. There may be too much or not enough of all of these things (ie. an overgrowth of bacteria, or not enough good bacteria ) so again it is best to see your practitioner for the best advice.

Foods that support:

  • Lemon juice in water is always a naturopathic favourite for stimulating our digestive system as it is bitter; toning the vagus nerve and sending the signal to secrete our digestive juices – therefore helping us to better break down our food.
  • Prebiotic food ( those that are fibrous and hard to break down ) which includes most vegetables. Leafy greens, root vegetables, and anything else that is an insoluble fibre is what is meant here. These are what actually feed our probiotics or good bacteria and help to promote a healthy digestive system – which may then also improve our skin.
  • Bone broth: the glutamine in bone broth helps to ensure our gut is not ‘leaky’ and that the cells are all intact as they should be in the lining of our stomach and intestines. This can often be a cause for acne as when our nutrients are not being absorbed, toxins may also be being excreted back into the bloodstream instead of being processed as they should.

Herbs:

  • Gentiana Lutea / gentian is a go-to bitter herb, with much the same action as your lemon juice in water. This can be convenient to take with you in a dropper bottle so you can continue this practice while at work or school.
  • Calendula officinalis / marigold: can be useful in healing that lining of our digestive system as well as having other great benefits for the skin.
  • Ulmus rubra / slippery elm: another great herb that can be used to heal the lining of the digestive system. This is taken as a powder and mixed with water.

LIVER

Foods that support:

  • Again any bitter foods such as lemon juice, rocket, artichoke, grapefruit will support the liver in it’s detoxification pathways. Including bitter foods in the diet daily is a great way to support this organ. Avoid overloading this organ with too much fatty foods, alcohol, caffeine and sugars.

Herbs:

  • Bitter herbs such as Gentiana and Silybum marianum (milk thistle ) are also useful for this same purpose. Other herbs that act as lymphatics or alternatives are great (such as Trifolium pratense / red clover ) as these ensure all of our eliminatory pathways are working properly – not just the liver.

BLADDER

Foods that support:

  • Drinking enough water for your body and the amount of exercise you are doing are important here. A rough rule to go by is 1.5 litres of water a day. Avoid drinking too much alcohol and caffeine as these may irritate the bladder.

Herbs:

  • Urtica dioica / stinging nettle is a lovely diuretic. This means it promotes an increase in the output of your urine, and also increases the removal of uric acid.

HORMONES

Foods that support:

  • This largely depends on what is actually out of balance, which can be determined by your naturopath. However general foods to support healthy hormones are the same as for liver support, as we want to promote the clearance of these. Our healthy fats such as avocado, olive oil, oily fish, nuts seeds and legumes are important to include in the diet as this fat forms cholesterol which is where our sex hormones are made from.

Herbs:

  • There are oh so many herbs we can use for hormone imbalance, but it is incredibly important to do so with the guidance of your naturopath as they are very powerful and you may cause further imbalance.

HEART

Foods that support:

  • All of our antioxidant foods are great for heart health, as well as once again our healthy fats which promote ‘good’ cholesterol levels.

Herbs:

  • Crataegus monogyna / Hawthorn berries are one of the most used herbs for heart health. They are antioxidant rich, trophorestorative for the cardiovascular system, hypotensive, protective against myocardial damage and much more. Under the guidance of your naturopath these are usually taken as a liquid herbal.

WHAT FACE MAPPING CAN TELL YOU ABOUT YOUR HOLISTIC HEALTH | JULISA.coIn general, when it comes to the health of the skin there are many potential underlying causes and face mapping is a great way to begin to understand what is potentially going on underneath the surface. Have you ever used facial mapping ? If so do you find it a useful tool for looking at your health as a whole and treating the underlying causes of your skin issues? Let us know in the comment below.
