5 Best Vegan Beauty Oils for Acne Prone Skin

Before diving into these five wonderful vegan beauty oils you can use topically for your acne prone skin, a reminder that acne is merely a symptom of often other underlying imbalances in the body.

In order to treat acne effectively, it is imperative that you also look at what’s going on inside your body. This isn’t just to say your diet alone, as things like your gut health, hormonal balance, immune system and much more all come into play when dealing with acne.

What are the causes of acne?

Acne itself can be caused by an over activity of sebaceous glands within the skin, and this sebum cannot ‘escape’ as hair follicles become blocked due to overproduction of keratin.

This excess of keratin is kind of a build up of skin cells, which are not shedding or being removed properly.

Causes for these imbalances are often due to hormonal issues – though this itself can stem from a range of other different underlying issues within the body, like your diet and lifestyle.

Vegan Plant-based Skin Oils for Acne Prone Skin

The following oils contain properties that help to fight the bacteria (P. acnes) that can often also be overgrown and out of balance on the skin. Many also contain anti-inflammatory properties that may help in calming the redness and anger in your skin. But please know if you would like a truly effective treatment for your acne, you must start with the cause itself.

TAMANU OIL | Calophyllum inophyllum L.

The active properties of Tamanu oil that have been reported include its resinous compounds, as well as it’s fatty acid content.

The resinous part of the oil contains neoflavonoids and pyranocoumarins, and these are responsible for the oil’s antioxidant effects.

Tamanu oil also has antibacterial effects, and studies have found it to be effective for the bacteria that contributes to acne – Propionibacterium acnes. It is also anti-inflammatory; down regulating pro inflammatory cytokines.

Tamanu oil has also been found to be effective in increasing collagen by up to 10 to 40% (found in vitro). Tamanu can also be helpful for the wound healing process, and for this reason is useful for acne.

Check out this article we published earlier on the multiple benefits of tamanu oil for your skin, hair, nails and cuticles.

At Julisa we carry a beautiful range of Tamanu Oil which is the hero ingredient in our Mermaid Elixir skin oil, the perfect addition to your skincare regime if you have acne prone skin.

ROSEHIP OIL | Rosa canina L.

Rosehip oil contains a high amount of unsaturated fatty acids; or ‘good fats’. The most abundant of which are linoleic acid, a-linolenic acid and oleic acid.

Our skin needs these healthy fatty acids, not just through our diet but also topically, in order to retain moisture and therefore not produce an excess of sebum (which can contribute to acne).

POMEGRANATE OIL | Punica granatum

Pomegranate extract has been found to have antibacterial effects against P. acnes.

The main constituents within include polyphenols and tannins. As well as being able to inhibit the bacteria that can cause acne, pomegranate extract can also down regulate (reduce) sebum production, as well as reduce inflammation and keratinocyte over proliferation.

COCONUT OIL | Cocus nucifera

Coconut oil contains many fatty acids, including myristic acid, palmitic acid, lauric acid, caprylic acid, stearic acid, linoleic acid, oleic acid and capric acid.

Collagen has been found to be effective in promoting faster wound healing and turnover of collagen – thus it may be beneficial in the healing of acne and acne scars.

One of the fatty acids in particular (Monolaurin – derived from lauric acid ) has been found to have effective antibacterial effects against P. acnes, making it useful in preventing breakouts in the first place.

JOJOBA OIL | Simmondsia chinensis

Jojoba oil may be beneficial for acne due to its high content of ‘wax esters’, which help to repair imbalanced or impaired skin barriers – such as in the case in someone with acne. It is also a great anti inflammatory, so may help with soothing or calming inflamed skin.

At Julisa we have created a skin-repairing blend of acne-friendly beauty oils with Rose Otto, Jojoba and Tamanu Oil. This hydrating vegan oil blend is wonderful for calming irritated skin.
